What I Edit (and What I Don’t)

To ensure we are a strong creative and intellectual fit, my editorial focus is dedicated to the following:

  • Fantasy, historical and literary fiction, and narrative non-fiction: I am especially interested in stories that weave together folklore, mythology, rich landscapes, and historical resonance. I love character-driven cozy fantasy and stories with warmth and whimsy, as well as sweeping epics. Developmental and line editing available for full manuscripts, novellas, and short stories. I am looking here for adult or YA works, but not middle-grade or children’s books.

  • Humanities and social sciences commentary: Editing and feedback on well-researched and thoughtful explorations of themes and ideas. This can be academic articles, monographs, or standalone essays.

  • Academic-to-trade adaptations: Helping you to translate and transform your dissertation, monograph, or essay collection, from the strict parameters of scholarly requirements into compelling, accessible books for a general readership while still retaining your core insights and findings.

A note on boundaries (and publishing realities)

While I love working across a wide variety of non-fiction and essay forms, please note that I do not take on memoirs, genre romance, or children's books.

Please note also a few practical parameters for our work together:

  • The query trenches: I do not write, draft, or rewrite query letters or synopses. This is your job as the writer; figuring out how to pitch your manuscript is a vital part of finding its heart. I am happy to line edit and refine what you write, but you must do this work first.

  • The reality of the publishing world: Editing and mentoring are a necessary part of creating a submission-ready manuscript. However, because the publishing world is subjective, fickle, and unpredictable, I make no guarantees or promises regarding representation, book deals, or publication. This is equally true whether you are seeking to publish an essay in an online journal or zine, or find an agent for your 120K-word manuscript. My role is to elevate your craft; the journey from there belongs to you.

One-on-One Asynchronous Courses

If you are looking to better understand the craft of writing without the pressure of live scheduling, I offer short, one-on-one asynchronous courses.

I am happy to share a course syllabus to help you decide if the course will be helpful to you. But rather than sending the complete curriculum upfront, these courses are delivered in four separate modules. I will send you a PDF of the lesson and assignment for Part One, you complete the homework on your own time, and return it when you’re ready for personalized, one-on-one feedback before we move on to the next module. Payment is due for each module as we go along.

Current course offerings

  • The Hero’s Journey and Other Narrative Structures: A deep dive into the bones of storytelling and how to effectively map your protagonist's path (4 modules. Each should take approx. 45 minutes for you to complete. Price includes feedback on assignments).

  • Literary Criticism for Writers: A practical toolkit for analysing texts, understanding critical theory, and applying those insights to your own writing (4 modules. Each should take approx. 45 minutes for you to complete. Price includes feedback on assignments).
